4th of july children’s parade
The city of Midland has worked to create a fun Independence Day celebration for it’s residents but the most fun is one of the oldest celebrations.
Since 1963, the Col. Theunis Dey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has hosted a Children’s Sidewalk Parade every 4th of July. Little ones line up, dressed in their red, white and blue outfits, many of them riding a bike, or being pulled in a wagon. Ages birth to 12 years old are welcome to join the parade and parents walk with the youngest of the group.
Some of the organizers checking in children marched in the first parades, many years ago. They work hard to make sure each child receives a flag to wave and a ribbon to pin on their shirt. After that, they direct the children and their parents to the section with the child’s age group.
There is excitement as children take their places with others of their age. They compare decorations, talk about what they’re doing later with their families, and wait as patiently as they can. And then comes the exciting moment they are waiting for! They are released and they are off. The older kids speed away on their bikes, while the younger ones often call to their parents to pull their wagons faster. Everyone is joyous and loud with their joy.
These sweet ladies who put on this parade are miracle workers, helping children create fun memories of summer and patriotism for their country.
